Microsoft is evolving Copilot toward autonomous AI agents that can carry out tasks, monitor processes and collaborate with employees. Copilot Autopilot is the next step — from an assistant that answers questions to a digital coworker.
From AI assistant to autonomous agent
Until now, Microsoft 365 Copilot was mainly associated with help drafting documents, analysing Excel data, preparing presentations or summarising Teams meetings.
Copilot Autopilot is meant to go much further. Instead of issuing every command, a user will be able to set a goal, scope of responsibility and operating rules for an agent that then carries out the assigned work.
Autopilot will run in the cloud with its own identity, memory, mailbox and workspace. Integrated with Microsoft 365, it can keep working even when the user is away from the computer.
What will Copilot Autopilot be able to do?
Microsoft points to several potential business uses:
- Process automation — running recurring tasks and monitoring progress.
- Project management — coordinating work, reminding about deadlines and preparing reports.
- Information handling — analysing messages, documents and company data.
- Team collaboration — communicating with employees through Microsoft 365 tools.
- Long-running work — remembering context and continuing started activities.
Access control, audit and human approval for decisions that require a person are expected to be essential parts of the solution.
AI starts doing the work, not only supporting it
Microsoft’s approach fits the broader Agentic AI trend. Solutions that can use company systems, take defined actions and automate multi-step processes are becoming more important than tools that only generate answers.
For example, an AI agent may prepare a sales summary, gather project progress, analyse documentation or draft a report for management — with appropriate permissions and oversight.
When will Copilot Autopilot be available?
According to Microsoft information from 30 October 2026, Copilot Autopilot is due to begin rolling out in November within the Microsoft 365 Frontier programme.
That means it is not yet generally available to all Microsoft 365 users. Features and availability may depend on licence, region and organisation configuration.
